04.03.2010 Tory threat to GP appointments
While Labour is working hard to extend the opening hours of GP surgeries the Tories would let doctors cut them. Speaking today, Bob Blizzard, MP for Waveney (Lowestoft) and deputy regional minister, pictured left, said: “Thanks to Labour’s reforms, families all across the East of England are now able to book GP appointments outside working hours in the evenings and at weekends. But the Tories say they would let GPs cut their hours, making it more difficult for you to see your doctor when you need to. “This goes to show, yet again, that David Cameron’s Tories aren’t on the side of NHS users.” In April 2008 less than 12% of GP surgeries had extended hours. Over 75% now offer appointments outside the hours 8-6, Monday to Friday. Chris Mole, MP for Ipswich, said: “People need their basic health services to be available locally, at a time that fits around their busy modern lives. If the Tories want to scrap the GP contracts, they will also be scrapping the incentives GPs have to stay open longer, and extended services will plummet across Suffolk.“ Labour's Health Secretary Andy Burnham said: “People should take a take a long hard look at what the Tories say their plans are for the NHS.“
