08.03.2010 MP welcomes £600,000 KickStart for affordable housing
The funding has been provided under the KickStart scheme. This is designed to ensure that work on low cost housing projects that has been held up during the recession can now resume, which will bost employment and the supply of affordable housing. The funding is given to developers under stringent guidelines, including the expectation that they will employ local young apprentices. The funding will help re-start the building of 51 affordable houses in Ipswich, 38 of which will be available under the Government’s HomeBuy Direct. This offers buyers an equity loan of up to 30 per cent of the purchase price, co-funded by Government and the developer, which will help many first time buyers in Ipswich on to the housing ladder. Responding to the announcement, Chris Mole said the £600,000 was: “. . . a boost to all of those people in Ipswich who are waiting for a new home. “It is also a boost for local apprentices and building firms in these difficult economic times. As I see it, everybody wins from schemes like this; local firms get more contracts, young people have the chance to learn the building trade on the job and improve their skills, and local people get more affordable housing.“
