17.07.2010 Labour councillors challenge excessive salaries on Suffolk Council

Andrea HillControversial salaries of Suffolk County Council’s bosses will not be reviewed, despite widespread opposition to giving staff such as chief executive Andrea Hill (pictured) vast salaries at a time when local authorities are bringing down costs.  At a council meeting on Thursday it was revealed that eight council employees get more than £100,000 per year each, while Mrs Hill receives nearly £270,000, including her pension.

Labour councillors put forward a motion calling on the cabinet to review the salaries with a view to reducing them by 25 per cent.  However, the motion was rejected, much to the disappointment of Labour leader Sandy Martin.

Sandy said: “At a time when staff pay is being frozen, and thousands are worried about their jobs, and hundreds will almost certainly lose them, the difficult decisions which the most senior staff will need to take will be made that much more difficult by the fact that the decision takers will be earning up to 16 times more than the people whose lives are being decided about.”
