22.07.2010 Labour wins seat in first electoral test in Suffolk since General Election

Tony BavingtonLabour's Tony Bavington won the Great Cornard North seat of Babergh District Council in a by-election today, in Suffolk's first test for the Tory/Lib Dem coalition.

Ipswich Labour Party members played their part in the campaign sending small teams over to Cornard to help Tony and his colleagues in South Suffolk Labour Party.  The by-election was caused by the resignation of a sitting Tory councillor, and following a recent Parish Council by-election victory in the same ward, the Liberals had high hopes of victory, but plummetted to third place.

Full result: Tony Bavington (Labour) 340; Conservative 201; Liberal Democrat 141; UKIP 72.
