27.01.2010 Chris Mole: Ipswich people want to keep their bus company

Chris Mole Ipswich Buses not in serviceChris Mole MP today called for Ipswich Council not to sell off Ipswich Buses.

Speaking ahead of the council’s debate on the matter this week Chris said, “It is clear from what people are saying to me, they value and want to hold on to this popular bus company. I’ve recently written to constituents who previously contacted me about bus services and no one who has got back to me about this proposal supports what the Conservative/Lib Dem administration is doing.

The most recent Transport Act gave councils the power to better regulate private bus contracts in their areas, but our council already has much more say than most councils over bus services in the town. Why give it away?

Getting public transport right should be key to the council’s social and environmental objectives, yet Ipswich council is prepared to lose the best tool it has.

I suppose we should not be surprised following the Tory county council stripping Ipswich Buses of the Park and Ride contract, then the Conservative/Lib Dem borough council taking money out of the company denying it resources it needs to invest, but this is no reward for the century of service the company has given our town."
