Children's Centres

Gordon Brown launched the Labour government's Children's Centre programme in 2004, as the successor to Neighbourhood Nurseries and Sure Start.

Both Neighbourhood Nurseries and Sure Start had shown that investing in services for children and families brough real benefits to to them and their communities.  Sure Start in particular had shown that services needed to be wider ranging and more flexible and Children's Centres were the response to that.

The government provided core funding over a number of years and local councils were set the task of developing Children's Centres that met the identified needs of the community they served.  This lead to the development of over 3,500 Children's Centres across the country and no fewer than 12 in Ipswich.  The links below will take you to more information about each of the local ones:

Although every centre has to provide a set of core services, particularly signposting to services like childcare, each centre is different.
