It’s rare to come up with a scheme where everyone’s a winner but our plans to install solar panels on over 2,000 council houses looks like one.
Over the lifetime of the panels Ipswich council tax payers will benefit to the tune of nearly £2million from the Government’s Feed-in Tariff scheme.
Tenants will benefit from free electricity generated during daylight hours. This will benefit most of all pensioners, disabled people who are unable to work and parents with young children as they are more likely to be at home during the day.
And of course the whole planet benefits from the reduction in carbon emissions.
The only disappointment is that we can’t install panels on all our council houses as some of their roofs don’t face the right way to catch enough sun. This wasn’t something people were thinking about when they built council houses back in the fifties!
Solar PV technology is improving all the time though so it may be that some of the properties that aren’t viable now, will become so in the future.
