Gainsborough Ward - Martin Cook

Martin Cook is the Labour Party candidate for Gainsborough at the Borough Council election on Thursday 2nd May 2019.

Martin was first elected to the Borough Council in 1995 and has represented Gainsborough for the last eleven years. Employed as a Senior Manager with Openreach, based at Adastral Park, Martin has lived in Ipswich all his working life.

At a local level, Martin is sad to see the achievements of the last Labour Government, such as Sure Start and the neighbourhood policing base on Clapgate Lane, being dismantled as a result of Tory austerity. Meanwhile, many people in Gainsborough are struggling day-to-day as a result of cruel Conservative policies like the Bedroom Tax and cuts to benefits and tax credits. As part of the Ipswich Labour team he is proud to be fighting back and helping to protect the local services that people in Gainsborough rely on.

Martin says “I campaigned strongly to see off the threat of the now abandoned Upper Orwell Crossing. This Tory bridge would have brought 1000 extra vehicles an hour down Landseer Road at peak times, adding to the problems with HGVs that local residents already suffer. What Ipswich needs is a Northern bypass that will help to relieve our traffic problems, not add to them.”
