New analysis from Ipswich Labour, based on research by the TUC, has revealed that wages of the average worker in the town has dropped by a staggering £66 a month – £792 a year – in real terms over 2022. This is the biggest wage squeeze in almost half a century.

This year, workers in Ipswich have seen:

  • Inflation hit 11%
  • Taxes hit their highest level in 70 years
  • NHS waiting lists hit record highs – over 7 million across the country are now waiting for care

Publishing the data, Jack Abbott, Labour and Co-operative Parliamentary Candidate for Ipswich, said:

“This has been a dismal year for working people in Ipswich. Wages are down, inflation is soaring, taxes are higher than at any point since the Second World War, and our public services are on the verge of collapse.

“After 12 years of Conservative rule, our country is in a mess, and hardworking people are ending the year struggling to heat their homes.

“Labour’s Green Prosperity Plan will get Britain going again, bringing down bills, boosting growth and creating a million jobs to help places like Ipswich win the high skilled high paid roles of the future.

“Our great country is being held back by a failing Tory government, but there is a cure – a Labour government – and that’s what Ipswich Labour is fighting to deliver.”
